Sharman Gill has been a writer for University Communications since October 2024. She primarily writes feature stories for news.byu.edu, highlighting premier research and inspiring learning projects.

Sharman previously worked for 11 years as a writing instructor for BYU and Snow College. She developed BIO 316, an advanced scientific communication course for mentored-research students in the Life Sciences. She has a rich background in professional writing with opportunities to write for Community News (Moscow, ID), Duke Clinical Research Institute, Colorado State Parks, and the US Forest Service.

Sharman received a bachelor’s degree in conservation biology and a master’s degree in English from BYU. She has published academic articles in Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and the Environment and Stance: Studies on the Family, as well as several poems in academic journals and popular magazines. In 2021 she received the Adjunct Faculty Award in BYU’s College of Life Sciences.

A recent BYU study, led by nursing professor Corinna Trujillo Tanner, examined social isolation in an especially vulnerable group — older adults with vision and hearing impairments. Researchers say the results, showing higher social connection in US Hispanic and Mexican older adults, can be explained by the shared ethnic cultural value of familismo that prioritizes family, respect for the elders, and reliance on one another for essential support.
