Name: Benjamin Bikman
BYU employee since: 2011
My job at BYU is… a scientist that studies metabolic function and a professor that teaches about the myriad ways things can go wrong with human physiology (i.e., pathophysiology).
Currently I’m working… with my students to determine the factors and mechanisms that regulate metabolic rate in fat tissue.
Learning that fat cells secrete and respond to hormones sparked my interest in my field.
When I have 30 minutes of free time, you can find me… sneaking down to the sauna in the SFH.
Students don’t think I notice… when they roll their eyes in class.
The best advice I ever got about teaching is… “Take your assignment seriously, but not yourself.”
Three things that are always found in my refrigerator are… bacon, eggs and cheese.
If I could travel anywhere, I would go… with my family to the Maldives and stay in an above-water bungalow. With plenty of sunscreen.
My most embarrassing moment was when… I introduced a speaker at a scientific conference as a man, only to learn that the speaker was a woman (in my defense, her name was pretty confusing).
On Saturday mornings you’ll find me… busily cleaning the house with my family — I don’t like clutter!
