Cougar Queries is a series profiling BYU employees by asking them questions about their work, interests and life.
BYU employee since: 2018
My job at BYU is… a law professor. I'm also currently serving as the associate dean for faculty and curriculum at the Law School.
I’m currently working on… exploring questions like: What role should law and regulation play in the public and private investment funds that finance much of the American economy? Should private investments be open to ordinary people saving for retirement through 401Ks, or limited to large institutions that can fend for themselves?
My favorite part about teaching is… lifting my students’ sights to see the amazing things they're capable of.

The best advice I’ve ever got about teaching is… share your authentic self with your students.
When I have 30 minutes of free time, you can find me… taking a power nap.
On Saturday mornings you’ll find me… racing around Utah County to get to all my kids’ soccer games, basketball games and track meets.
I’m most looking forward to… our annual family vacations to Southern California and Wyoming this summer.
My favorite podcast to listen to regularly is…. Cautionary Tales with Tom Harford.
My fondest memory from my childhood is when… I went on Saturday morning surf trips with my dad.
When I tell people I work for BYU, they often say… I love Utah — it's beautiful!
My advice to incoming freshmen (and law students) is… work as hard as you can in your classes but don't neglect your spiritual hygiene or the relationships that matter most in your life.
