Cougar Query: "One item on my bucket list is to get BYU to change from Coke to Pepsi."

Name: Gayla Sorenson

BYU employee since: September 2014

My job at BYU is: Dean of Admissions at the J. Reuben Clark Law School. I get to meet hundreds of students and talk to them about all the benefits that a legal education provides and all the good a legal education can empower them to do. Then I have the very interesting job of reviewing applications and making recommendations about who to admit. Finally, I help students who are admitted consider their options and hopefully find their places here at BYU Law.

Currently Im working on… making sure this fall’s class is ready for the exciting adventure they are about to begin while also gearing up for a very hectic fall recruiting season.

Going to law school changed the way I view everything… because it taught me how to think about problems, issues and people in both broader and deeper ways as well as teaching me to be a problem solver rather than just an issue-spotter.

When I tell people I work for BYU, they often say… “But don’t you live in Indiana?” (I commute from Fort Wayne, Indiana.)

My advice to incoming freshman is… Have fun, but avoid having a first year GPA that you have to try to explain away the rest of your life!

I became a BYU fan when… my oldest sister started attending BYU in 1973.

Ive hiked Y Mountain zero times. Sadly, I’ve never hiked Y Mountain; however, I have hiked Timp if that counts for anything, and last year I did a 2-day, 40-mile walk to raise money for breast cancer research.

My favorite spot on campus is a toss-up between LaVell Edwards Stadium, The Creamery and the Law School because I love football, ice cream and the people and principles of the Law School — not necessarily in that order.

On Saturday mornings youll find me creating a to-do list for (wait, I mean “with”) my husband.

Three things that are always found in my refrigerator are limp celery, curdled milk and one or two of any number of varieties of mold.

My favorite TV show growing up was “The Wonderful World of Disney” on Sunday evenings.

One item on my bucket list is to get BYU to change from Coke to Pepsi. A more realistic bucket list item is to see the Northern Lights.
