The Westminster College Classical Greek Theatre Festival will perform the tragicomedy “ION” by Euripides on Monday Sept. 25 at 5 p.m. with a free pre-performance lecture at 4 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall in the Harris Fine Arts Center.
The lesser known play is directed by Andra Harbold and follows the tale of Kreousa, queen of Athens, and Xouthos, her foreign husband. They approach the god Apollo for help in ending their childlessness, not knowing that Apollo and Kreousa had a son that Apollo raised to become a temple servant in Delphi.
Now the child is entering manhood and Apollo bestows him on Xouthos as his child, and Xouthos names him Ion. Kreousa, not knowing that the boy is her son, tries to kill him. The attempt fails, and the boy threatens to kill Kreousa, but then she finds out that he is her son and they live their lives believing that the boy is the son of Kreousa and Xouthos.
The performance at BYU is part of a performance tour at different locations throughout the state after “ION” opens in Westminster College’s Courage Theater on Sept. 7.
