BYU Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band: The Music of The San Francisco Jazz Revival

The City by the Bay's classic music scene comes to life as BYU's Jazz Dixieland Legacy Band performs a San Francisco jazz revival on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 P.M. in the de Jong Concert Hall. The performance is free.

The revival focuses on the "Swing Era" of the 1940s and 1950s and highlights jazz legends such as Duke Ellington, Lu Watters, Pee Wee Hunt, and many more notable composers.

This orchestral form of jazz became the popular music of the era as its swing-style beats sent millions to the dance floor. The previously popular New Orleans-style jazz seemed doomed as it became 'old fashioned' and even 'corny.'

"A group of young musicians in the San Francisco Bay area started to play a new unique kind of tradition jazz based on the original New Orleans sounds," said Steve Call, director of the group. "This spawned a movement of so-called 'Dixieland Bands' that came to be popular in the 1950s."

The eight-person group will perform twelve different songs from the era featuring classic jazz instruments such as the clarinet, saxophone, banjo, and more.
