Elder Clark G. Gilbert, a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Commissioner of the Church Educational System, is scheduled to speak during Brigham Young University’s commencement exercises on Thursday, April 24, at 10 a.m.
J. Clifford Wallace, a former senior United States circuit judge, will be the honorary degree recipient.
BYU President C. Shane Reese will conduct the exercises, which will be held in person and broadcast live on BYUtv from the Marriott Center. All college convocations will be held April 24-25. Individual colleges will communicate their respective details about convocations.
About the Speaker

Elder Clark G. Gilbert was sustained as a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 3, 2021.
At the time of his call, he was serving as an Area Seventy in the Utah Area.
Prior to his full-time calling, Elder Gilbert worked as president of BYU–Idaho for two years before being appointed president of BYU–Pathway Worldwide.
He also worked as the chief executive officer of the Deseret News and Desert Digital Media, an associate academic vice president of BYU–Idaho and a professor of entrepreneurial management at Harvard University.
Elder Gilbert received a bachelor’s degree in international relations from BYU, a master’s degree in Asian studies from Stanford University and a doctorate from Harvard University.
About the Honorary Doctorate
J. Clifford Wallace will receive an honorary Doctor of Law and Public Service degree.

Wallace was sworn in as a United States District Judge for the Southern District of California on October 29, 1970. He was then elevated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, where he served for almost 26 years.
He then served as Chief Judge of the Circuit from 1991-1996 and took senior status on April 8, 1996.
Wallace taught as a visiting professor at numerous universities, including BYU, where he created and taught a course in judicial administration in 1982.
After three years as a sailor in the U.S. Navy, Wallace graduated from San Diego State College with honors and distinction in 1952, majoring in economics and minoring in political science. He graduated from Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California, Berkeley and was a member of the Board of Editors of the California Law Review.
