BYU Women’s Chorus will perform Mar. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall in the Harris Fine Arts Center at BYU. Tickets are $10 for the public, $9 for alumni or seniors and $6 for those with BYU or student IDs. Under the direction of Jean Applonie, Women’s Chorus has prepared a night full of variety including Baroque, contemporary, popular folk and hymns. The theme for the night’s performance is Mary Speaks.
“We rehearse together four days a week and we strive to give more than just the notes on the page,” Women’s Chorus member Hillary Jones said. “We give each piece purpose and individually consider the meaning of the piece and what we hope to convey to our listeners.”
The concert will begin with Bach’s “Magnificat 1st Movement,” followed by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger’s “Ave Regina,” and another “Magnificat” by Z. Randall Stroope. These pieces will be paired with a more contemporary set of contrasting LDS hymns, “I Feel My Savior’s Love” and “I Know that My Redeemer Lives.”
While Bach’s “Magnificat” is familiar to many, Applonie has voiced the piece for Women’s Chorus. Under the direction of Alexander Woods, BYU’s Baroque Ensemble will accompany Women’s Chorus during this piece.
The performance will also include the Christmas song, “What Child is This” arranged by Molly Ijames. Applonie chose to include this piece as it ties the performance to the upcoming Easter holiday. Finally, the concert will include a few secular songs and the program’s landmark piece “Mary Speaks” composed by Daniel Gawthrop with text by Madeleine L’Engle.
“The girls really grabbed hold of “Mary Speaks” and it is one of their favorites,” Applonie said. “L’Engle has this different, personal and intimate perspective on Jesus and it’s a really beautiful a cappella piece.”
The performance will also feature a special performance from Lux Singers.
