The Brigham Young University Symphonic Band will perform its first of two concerts this semester Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall in the Harris Fine Arts Center at BYU. This first concert, entitled To the Sky!, will center around the idea of man’s quest for flight.
“From the beginning of recorded history, the theme of flight can be found in myth, legend, art, literature and religion,” director Kirt Saville said. “Orville Wright described this as ‘an idea that has always impassioned mankind.’”
Saville strives to give students an opportunity to expand their artistic, technical and performance horizons. One of the student performers, Katie Worsham, is the principal flutist in the band and has witnessed the progress she and others have made under Saville’s direction.
"My experience in Symphonic Band has been extremely rewarding,” Worsham said. “Dr. Saville is a great conductor who knows how to bring out the very best in his students, so we've come a long way this year.”
The night will feature acclaimed audio book narrator Diane Dabczynski as the poetic voice accompanying the Symphonic Band’s performance.
“In this music, you’ll experience everything from exciting, triumphant adventures in the sky to lush colors that reminisce of glorious sunsets,” Warsham said. “You’ll reconnect with your own dreams and that deeply-rooted human desire to reach for the heavens.”
The group consists of approximately 75 performers and is devoted to performing the finest band masterpieces from a variety of historical eras in addition to compositions from faculty and student composers.
