State Department's Critical Language Scholarship program topic for BYU events Oct. 19

Casey Poe, a former Critical Language Scholarship site director, will present a lecture and conduct a workshop Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Brigham Young University's David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies.

He will address "Federal Programs and International Education:Money Well Spent in an Era of Fiscal Constraints?" at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building. At 3 p.m., he will conduct a workshop on "Critical Language Scholarships: Getting In and Out Successfully," also in 238 HRCB. Both events are free, and the public is welcome to attend.

The CLS Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, provides fully funded, group-based, intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate, master’s degree and doctoral students. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.

Poe was the Arabic site director in Alexandria and Fes. Previously, he was a study abroad advisor at the University of Utah responsible for international programs in Spain, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

He studied Arabic at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Arabic Immersion Program and at the American University in Cairo’s Arabic Language Institute.

His visit to campus is co-sponsored by the Office of Prestigious Scholarships, Foreign Service Student Organization and David M. Kennedy Center Advisement.
