Middle and high school students invited to BYU Open Lab Days March 11 and 18

For hands-on chemistry experience, demonstrations

Y-Chem, Brigham Young University’s student chapter of the American Chemical Society, will host free Open Lab Days for local middle school and high school students Saturday, May 11, and Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in and around the Ezra Taft Benson Building on the south end of campus.

On Open Lab Days, the students will visit chemistry labs at BYU to have some hands-on chemistry experience and to see memorable demonstrations. A few professors and a team of student volunteers from Y-Chem will conduct the demonstrations and experiments.

“The BYU volunteers have a great time interacting with the students, teaching them and seeing the students actually getting excited about chemistry,” said Joel Everett, Y-Chem president.

Y-Chem volunteers hope that Open Lab Day will help inspire interest in the sciences for teenagers with its explosions, rocket building and chemical reactions.
