Music lovers of all ages are invited to attend two upcoming events presented as part of the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Family Concert Series.
“These concerts provide a unique opportunity for younger children, from newborns on up, to experience live music,” said Rob Dunn , professor of music education. “Often classical concerts have a minimum age requirement, but introducing music to children at an early age is important for brain development and success later in life, including future music development.”
The purpose behind the Family Concert Series is to provide an opportunity for the whole family to experience quality performances suitable for every age. The concerts last 30 to 40 minutes, take place early in the day and are designed specifically for younger audiences. After each performance, children are invited to meet and take pictures with the musicians. In addition, the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Foundation has provided a grant to make admission to this series free.
The inaugural concert is titled “Adventures in Opera” and will feature selections from the BYU School of Music’s production of “A Grand Night of Opera.” Audiences will have an opportunity to hear music from the tragic opera, “Suor Angelica,” as well as the comic opera “Gianni Schicchi.”
Dylan Glenn, who plays the role of Marco in “Gianni Schicchi,” described the opera as a “laugh-out-loud sort of experience,” with “situations so far-fetched and characters so delightfully absurd that you can’t help but laugh.”
“Jazz Makes Me Happy” is the second concert in the series. The performance will feature the BYU Jazz Ensemble playing some of their most toe-tapping and recognizable tunes from their repertoire. Selections will include classic big band favorites, sambas and even jazz arrangements of songs from beloved children films.
