Frederik Willem de Klerk to give BYU forum address Oct. 14

Former president of South Africa

Frederik Willem de Klerk, former president of South Africa, will present “Bridging the Gap: Globalization Without Isolation” at a Brigham Young University forum assembly at the Marriott Center Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 11:05 a.m.

De Klerk was president of South Africa from 1989 to 1994, during which time he released Nelson Mandela from prison, lifted the ban on the opposition group African National Congress and presided over the negotiations that led to the end of Apartheid—paving the way for adoption of South Africa’s first fully democratic constitution.

In 1993, de Klerk and Nelson Mandela were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

De Klerk established the F. W. de Klerk Foundation in 2000 to work for peace in multicommunity societies that are divided on cultural, ethnic, religious or linguistic lines.

Making fashion out of art: Students hit the runway with designs inspired by BYU Museum of Art exhibit

BYU students recently showcased fashion and makeup designs in a runway show at the Museum of Art. They each designed and modeled a look inspired by one of the paintings on exhibit from an art museum in Puerto Rico. On display until Jan. 3, The Sense of Beauty: Six Centuries of Painting from Museo de Arte de Ponce showcases world-class art that reflects the innate beauty of the human experience.
