Name: Emily Hellewell
Connection to BYU: Until very recently I worked in University Communications. I created the current version of Y News, the faculty and staff email; a bi-monthly email to students; and these Cougar Queries profiles. Now I work at Deseret Digital Media.
Comms 235: Intro to Public Relations …sparked my interest in my field. During my undergrad at BYU, I was running out of general education classes, so I spent an evening with my roommate flipping through the big book they used to print listing all the majors. I narrowed it down to a handful, including public relations. I signed up for Comms 235, got hooked in the first lecture, and never looked back.
My favorite BYU tradition is… lighting the Y …because... I love being anywhere in the valley and seeing the Y lit on the mountain.
On a Saturday morning you’ll find me… in class at the BYU Salt Lake Center. I’m in the second year of the executive MBA program. It’s been a great program for me and totally worth giving up every other Saturday (and many weeknights to do homework).
When I have 30 minutes of free time, you can find me… taking a walk or watching something on Netflix.
Three things you’ll always find in my fridge are… yogurt, bell peppers and blueberries.
One item on my bucket list is… to go to all seven continents. Four down (North and South America, Europe and Africa); three to go (Asia, Australia and Antarctica).
My favorite hobby is… questing to find the best hot chocolate. So far the one in the lead came from a little café in Bergen, Norway, although my mom makes a pretty tasty cup too.
Right now I’m reading… How Green Was My Valley by Richard Llewellyn and Home Waters by BYU Professor George Handley.
Living in Washington, D.C. …changed the way I view… myself …because… it was a life-molding experience. I was challenged. I got to do cool things. I learned how to do hard things. I made life-long friends.
