Name: Michalyn Steele
BYU Employee since: 2012
My job at BYU is… professor of law.
Currently I’m working on... a book project about the U.S. Supreme Court’s choice of language describing Native American people.
I get most excited about my work when… I can see the principles and ideals of the legal profession growing in my students.
Students don’t think I notice… that some of them are texting, web surfing or playing FreeCell during class.
Three things always in my refrigerator are… olives, cheese and Coke Zero.
When I have 30 minutes of free time you can find me… doing the New York Times crossword puzzle.
My favorite TV show growing up was… Laverne and Shirley.
One item on my bucket list is… to see the Northern Lights.
My favorite childhood memory is… Sunday afternoons at my Grandma’s house enjoying family and good food.
My go-to BYU Creamery ice cream flavor is… Bishop’s Bash.
My favorite quote is… “In a real sense all life is inter-related. All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be.” –Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
My favorite BYU tradition is… when the Y is lit on the mountainside to celebrate a new school year, homecoming and graduation.
My advice to incoming freshman is… you can do hard things.
