Cougar Query: "On Saturday afternoons you’ll find me on the visiting team's sidelines as a 'ball boy.'"

Name: Scott Eldredge

BYU employee since: I started as a student employee in 1982 and was full-time in 1984—right before the football team won the national championship. Coincidence? I think not!

My job at BYU is Digital Initiatives Program Manager. I make sure that rare and unique items from our library are available online. This means that I get to see and handle some of the coolest things ever.

Currently Im working on We are just starting on an amazing collection of photographs from Helen Foster Snow who, as a journalist, covered the Chinese revolution during the 1930s.

Im currently reading The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck, travel guides, and photography magazines.

When I have 30 minutes of free time, you can find me doing the New York Times crossword puzzle. But not the Sunday one – that’s way too hard!

My advice to incoming freshman is to make friends with a librarian. Today. It will make all the difference in your academics, and they happen to be pretty nice people too!

My most cherished memory at BYU was when Debbie, easily the prettiest and most out-of-my-league girl in the ward, inexplicably asked me to Preference, and then three months later when she said “Yes.” Well, actually she said “Of course I’ll marry you!” but you get the idea.

On Saturday afternoons youll find me at LaVell Edwards Stadium. I’ve been on the visiting team sideline as a “ball boy” for the last 25 seasons.

Ive been a BYU fan since my dad took me to the first game at the new stadium in 1964.

Three things that are always found in my refrigerator are jalapenos, Cholula, and way too many leftovers waiting to be thrown out.

My favorite quote is I have lots, but this one has been on my mind lately: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” –Mark Twain

My favorite TV show growing up was… Lost in Space. I wanted to be Will Robinson. This was problematic, however, as I had a huge crush on Angela Cartwright who played Penny, and I couldn’t marry her if she were my sister. What to do?
