Cougar Query: "My favorite spot on campus is the HFAC during Christmas break"

Name: Diane Reich

BYU employee since: 2007

My job at BYU is… I teach private voice lessons and related classes to Vocal Performance majors. I also coordinate that program.

Currently I’m working on… a concert tour with my colleagues (Drs. Rob Brandt and Scott Holden) featuring all classical music that is comic or light-hearted. Come see it on campus September 8th!

I get most excited about my work when… a student has a breakthrough in their vocal technique or in their understanding of the discipline. It is also really awesome to see and hear your student sing an opera role fantastically!

Birth... sparked my interest in my field. Actually I have always loved singing and performing. But it may have been teaching as a missionary that first opened my eyes to teaching.

Having a family... changed the way I view life and people because… it becomes very apparent how individual we all are, how challenging life can be in different ways for different individuals, what my weaknesses and strengths are and mostly how much joy and love is possible in this life.

When I have 30 minutes of free-time you can find me… wishing I could take a nap! Possibly reading a book, but most likely talking with my kids and/or husband.

What makes teaching the greatest job in the world is… students. They are great people and it is a blessing to be in a position to help prepare them for life.

My favorite spot on campus is… HFAC during Christmas break because the HFAC is beautifully decorated during Christmas and it is very quiet and peaceful during break.

Three things that are always found in my refrigerator are… there are so many things in our fridge that I could not narrow it down. We are a foodie family, so we like to explore lots of variety in food. It’s a fun and dangerous hobby!

The title of my autobiography would be… How Can I Keep From Singing?

My favorite joke is… one about linguists arguing over the word “butterfly” in various languages ... but it is not as funny in print.
