Cougar Query: "Dedicated faculty are why students succeed"

Name: Michelle Forstrom

BYU employee since... 2012. I’ve worked in the Ticket Office, the Department of Public Health and now I’m working in Student Affairs for the Dean of Students.

My job at BYU is... Assistant to the Dean of Students. We help students with everything they face outside the classroom. We offer support and tools for them to balance their lives as they move toward graduation.

Currently I’m working on... transitioning to a new job, finding an agent for my book “Walking Through Walls,” starting a middle grade novel and figuring out what’s for dinner.

My advice to graduating seniors is... buckle up.

On Saturday mornings you’ll find me… at Costco with the fam. It’s like the Celestial Kingdom with samples.

My go-to comfort food is… Peanut Butter Captain Crunch.

The title of my autobiography would be... Let’s Get This Party Started!

My favorite quote is... “Don’t give up! I believe in you all. A person’s a person no matter how small.” — Dr. Seuss

My favorite TV show growing up was... Wonder Woman

My fondest memory from my childhood was... hearing my Bulgarian grandfather describe the first time he laid eyes on my grandmother. She stood in a yellow dress watering her roses on her balcony, and he turned to the sailor next to him and said, “I’m going to marry that girl.”

My most embarrassing moment was... my sophomore year in high school. I ran onto the stage after a theater performance assembly in front of the whole school and yelled into my friend Arie's body mic, "Arie, will you go to Spring Fling with me?"  Well, Arie said “Yes!”, but his mic was turned off, so the rest of the school had no idea why this random girl had run onto the stage.

My favorite hobby is... writing. My husband is my biggest cheerleader and sounding board. The BYU classrooms of Chris Crowe and Carol Lynch Williams have inspired me to keep at it. Dedicated faculty like them are why students succeed.

One of my recent accomplishments is... winning First Place in the Creative Nonfiction Book category of the Utah Original Writing Competition for my book, “Walking Through Walls.” The story is of my mother’s indoctrination and escape from communist Bulgaria.
