Cougar Queries: "Work harder than you think you can."

Name:  Bryce Bunting

BYU employee since: 2007

My job at BYU is… assistant clinical professor in the Counseling and Career Center. My job is to teach classes on effective study and learning, conducting research on student success and advising students who are working to overcome academic challenges.

When I tell people I work for BYU, they often say… “Oh, what do you teach?” Or, “Didn’t you grow up as a Utah fan?"

I’m currently reading… Rising Strong, by Brené Brown, Challenging & Supporting the First-Year Student, by Lee Upcraft, Sports Illustrated and TIME.

My advice to incoming freshman is… to work harder than you think you can, remember that it’s smart to ask for help early and often and find something you’re excited about learning.

The best-kept BYU secret is… The Sensory Lab – they pay you to taste food!

I’ve been a BYU fan since… I transferred to BYU as an undergraduate student in 2003

My favorite spot on campus is… The Education in Zion Gallery.  It’s full of inspiring stories about the role of education in the Church and is a great place to think.

My favorite Cougar athlete is… Bryce Doman (BYU wide receiver 1988, 1991-1994). My mom took me to my first BYU Football game when I was seven. Doman caught a touchdown pass against UTEP that day. He graduated from the high school up the road from where I grew up. And, he was the only other person I had ever heard of up to that point that had my same name.

My most cherished memory at BYU was when… I walked out of the McKay Building after defending my dissertation. I was walking on air.

On Saturday mornings you’ll find me… trying to fight off middle-age at the Provo Recreation Center.

Three things that are always found in my refrigerator are… BYU Creamery milk, cold water and Diet Coke (talk to my wife about that one).

You’ll never find me without… a blue Bic pen.

My favorite quote is... I have two:

“God helps me, that’s what I think, and then I am calm.” – Carl Bloch

"You've got to learn your instrument. Then, you practice, practice, practice. And then, when you finally get up there on the bandstand, forget all that and just wail.” – Charlie Parker
