The BYU School of Music presents Jazz Combo Night Saturday, Nov. 5, at 9:30 p.m., in the Madsen Recital Hall of the Harris Fine Arts Center. The event is free and no ticket is required.
“The entertaining thing about this performance is that it is very creative. A lot of energy goes into this night, with a lot improvisation and spontaneity,” said Ray Smith, director of jazz studies and saxophone professor. “Combo night has been a lot of fun the last few years because it includes a lot of creative musicians.”
The showcase features seven of the school’s jazz groups. Each group will include multiple musicians and the groups will perform two songs, including a variety of different musical styles.
“Playing jazz gives the performers the opportunity to communicate with the audience through personal expression,” said Smith. “There is a lot of synergy as a performer interacts with other musicians around them and the audience is able to feel that energy and give it back.”
