BYU offers variety of summer youth writing camps

Brigham Young University is now offering 11 Summer Youth Writing Camps where participants can spend a fun-filled week with other young writers developing writing skills and exploring their creative sides.

Camp schedules and registration are available at writingcamps.byu.edu. All the camps include five full days (or half-days) of instruction, writing and classroom materials, a T-shirt and snacks. Most also include visits from guest authors.

June 10-14

The “Write Time, Write Now!” camp, for those entering grades 5-6, will help students learn how to find ideas for writing. The camp will focus on author Madeleine L’Engle, and students will get a ticket to the BYU production of the play based on her book, “A Wrinkle in Time.”

“On Your Mark, Get Set, Write!” is for sports fans grades 11-12, and the camp will teach skills for writing sports-related fiction and nonfiction.

“Write Before Your Eyes: Writing Flash Fiction” will help those in grades 9-12 learn to write vibrant, convincing and concise stories. Students will also learn professional photography techniques.

“Hackasaurus” is for those in grades 8-12 who want to build their own website. Students will learn how to use HTML tags to reinvent and make web pages.

June 10-21

The "Creating Writing Camp" is for student in grades 10-12 who yearn to write poetry, blogs, short stories and essays. The camp will teach how to develop ideas and characters, write dialogue, edit the work and get it published.

June 17-21

“Exploring the Writer in You-Part 1,” for grades 7-9, is all about self-discovery in writing. Students will learn what kinds of writing they most enjoy and how to improve their writing. Students can also register for “Polishing the Writer in You-Part 2,” which runs through June 24-28, together with Part 1 for a discounted price.

“Nature of Writing” will take those entering grades 3-4 outside to explore the BYU campus in search of the sights, smells and sounds of summer. Students will use art and writing to create a masterpiece. Morning and afternoon sessions are offered.

June 17-28

“I Want to Be a Writer: Now What?” will help students in grades 9-12 explore the different paths they can take on their writing journey. They’ll observe various types of professional writers in the mornings, then write in different genres in the afternoon.

June 24-28

In “Polishing the Writer in You-Part 2”, students will learn how to polish their writing so it says exactly what they want it to say.

July 8-12

“Graphic Novels and Comics” is for students entering grades 9-12, who will get to create five pages of a graphic novel or comic book. Professional writers and illustrators will share their expertise.

Aug. 5-9

“Exploring Art Through Writing” for grades 9-12 will use writing and basic sketching to explore the nature, history and beauty of traditional and modern art.

The writing camps are sponsored by BYU’s College of Humanities and Division of Continuing Education.
