The BYU School of Music presents the BYU Folk Music Ensemble concert Tuesday, Nov. 8, in the Madsen Recital Hall of the Harris Fine Arts Center.
The concert features a student ensemble, skilled at a variety of traditional musical forms including American Cajun, Bluegrass, Celtic and much more.
“Molly in the Mineshaft, a guest performing group, will also participate in the concert,” said Mark Geslison, director of Folk Music Ensembles. “This guest group is entirely made up of former Mountain Strings musicians. Molly in the Mineshaft plays a lot of American folk music plus some original compositions, but even their original music is very 'American folk' in style.”
The concert will also showcase Mountain Strings, the school’s folk music touring and performing band. They will perform music from the United States, Canada and Ireland. Mountain Strings also travels with the BYU International Folk Dance Ensemble. In May they will travel to Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand.
The BYU Folk Music Ensemble celebrates the rich variety and heritage of folk music. With an emphasis in American folk music, the program actually consists of several small ensembles, some of which assist the BYU International Folk Dancers both in their local performances and on their international tours.
