The BYU Faculty String Quartet takes the stage Friday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 P.M. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The quartet will play two pieces—Namasté, a piece that was commissioned through the Barlow Endowment by composer Ethan Wickman and Beethoven’s towering String Quartet, Opus 130.
“Namasté means the divine within me salutes the divine within you,” said quartet member Alexander Woods. “This piece tells a story. Each movement invokes vivid narrative, color, and atmosphere.”
Namasté features five moments, with each named after stories featured in the Vedas, a body of ancient and sacred Sanskrit texts. The quartet is also looking forward to playing one of Beethoven’s favorite pieces out of his personal compositions and also one of his last.
“The Opus 130 String Quartet is at the pinnacle of the quartet repertoire, and as such, is an incredibly challenging yet rewarding piece to play,” Woods said.
Woods is joined by three other faculty members of BYU’s School of Music—Monte Belknap, Claudine Bigelow and Michelle Kesler. Last year he also partnered with Scott Holden to help coach the Timpanogos Trio to their first place victory at the MTNA national competition. This concert is a free event.
