Brian Mathias and Neil Thornock to Play at Centennial Bell Tower for Carillon Recital Oct. 4

BYU School of Music faculty carillonneurs Brian Mathias and Neil Thornock present a carillon recital to kick off the autumn season. The recital takes place at the BYU Centennial Bell Tower Tuesday, October 4, at 7:30 p.m.
The concert features a wide range of repertory for the carillon, from Bach to folksong to experimental. It includes Castellations, an ambitious new work written by Scottish composer/organist Michael Bonaventure, and The Same Things I Became, a piece written by alumna Margot Murdoch for a Mother's Day concert last spring. Also featured are performances of music by Thornock and by three of the most innovative composers for the carillon in the last century: John Courter, Roy Hamlin Johnson and Gary White.
"The bells at BYU have fascinated me since I first heard them as a teenager visiting campus,” Thornock said. “We're fortunate to have such an instrument here, and I feel equally fortunate to have Dr. Brian Mathias join me. Dr. Mathias is a good friend, a fantastic musician and a treat to listen to."
The public is welcome to come sit near the bell tower and listen to the recital.
