Annual Marjorie Pay Hinckley Lecture Feb. 12 will feature parenting expert

William J. Doherty, a family therapist and director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program at the University of Minnesota, will speak on parenting in today’s world at the Fifth Annual Marjorie Pay Hinckley Endowed Chair Lecture Thursday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Gordon B. Hinckley Alumni and Visitors Center at Brigham Young University.

His lecture, “Parenting Wisely in a Too-Much-of-Everything-World,” will address parenting in an environment of on-the-go meals and hectic chauffeuring, where parents shuttle children to dance lessons, piano practice, Little League and more.

Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend.

Doherty has written several books on the subject, including “Take Back Your Kids: Confident Parenting in Turbulent Times,” “The Case of Overscheduled Children” and “Putting Family First: Successful Strategies for Reclaiming Family Life in a Hurry-Up World.” Several of his publications have received national attention, with articles in USA Today, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and appearances on Oprah, 20/20, the “Today” show and the CBS Morning Show.

He is a past president of the National Council on Family Relations, the nation's oldest interdisciplinary family studies organization. His work has been recognized by various awards, including the Significant Contribution to the Field of Marriage and Family Therapy Award, the Margaret E. Arcus Award for Outstanding Contribution to Family Life Education and the Outstanding Community Service Award from the University of Minnesota.

The Marjorie Pay Hinckley Endowed Chair in Social Work and the Social Sciences honors Sister Hinckley’s lifelong commitment to strengthening home and family. The Chair enriches the educational and professional lives of students and faculty in the College of Family, Home and Social Sciences as they strive to understand and alleviate problems faced by individuals and families worldwide.
