Alvin F. Sherman to present BYU devotional Jan. 30

Alvin F. Sherman, chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, will present a Brigham Young University devotional Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center.

His talk will address "Pilgrimages."

The devotional will be broadcast live on KBYU-TV (Channel 11), BYU Television, KBYU-FM (89.1), BYU Radio and byubroadcasting.org.

Sherman, who specializes in Spanish literature from the 18th and 19th centuries, received bachelor's and master's degrees from BYU and a doctoral degree in Spanish literature from the University of Virginia. He began his teaching career in the Department of Foreign Languages at Idaho State University, where he also served as assistant dean of Graduate Studies and Research.

He came to BYU in 1999, where he has directed study abroad programs in Madrid, Spain, and has organized a symposium on Miguel de Cervantes's "Don Quixote de la Mancha," along with his teaching duties.

Making fashion out of art: Students hit the runway with designs inspired by BYU Museum of Art exhibit

BYU students recently showcased fashion and makeup designs in a runway show at the Museum of Art. They each designed and modeled a look inspired by one of the paintings on exhibit from an art museum in Puerto Rico. On display until Jan. 3, The Sense of Beauty: Six Centuries of Painting from Museo de Arte de Ponce showcases world-class art that reflects the innate beauty of the human experience.

A Farmer's Field of Dreams? BYU-built smart tech maps moisture levels, will adjust watering automatically

The team of BYU engineers placed 86 Bluetooth devices throughout a 50-hectare field near Elberta, Utah, to measure water levels across every inch of the field. Placing this many sensors in a commercial field is unprecedented and allows researchers to see unique patterns that have never before been captured.
