Cougar Query: "You’ll never find me without my glasses. With them, I feel like a superhero in disguise!"

Name: Megan Sanborn Jones

BYU employee since: 2000

My job at BYU is chair of the Department of Theatre and Media Arts.

I’m currently working on… meeting with every member of the TMA faculty to find out what their goals are and how I can help achieve them; a history of the Hill Cumorah Pageant for the New York History Journal; and pre-production work to direct my favorite play, "The Clean House," by Sarah Ruhl.

I’m currently reading… three plays by American women: "Silent Sky" by Laura Gunderson, "Intimate Apparel" by Lynn Nottage and "What the Constitution Means to Me" by Heidi Schreck.

Being in high school musicals sparked my interest in my field. I played a Charity in "Anything Goes," Anytime Annie in "42nd Street," third Scottish lass from the left in "Brigadoon" and Golde in "Fiddler on the Roof."

My favorite lecture to teach is… how to compose stage pictures. I love helping students move bodies through space in provoking, engaging and beautiful ways. It makes me feel like we are engaged in God’s work as we create images that both please the eye and gladden the heart (D&C 59:18).

My go-to BYU Creamery ice cream flavor is… Pralines and Caramel.

Three things that are always found in my refrigerator are… cheese, cheese and more cheese. The Joneses love cheese — fresh, aged, soft rind, semi-soft, blue — we love them all.

You’ll never find me without… my glasses. Without them, I can’t see. With them, I feel like a superhero in disguise.

One item on my bucket list is… to see the "Oberammergau Passion Play." It only runs every 10 years and tells the entire story of Jesus’s life in a six-hour play. In German. Which I don’t speak. My family doesn’t speak it either, so it shows how much they love me that they are willing to come with me to see it!

My fondest memory from my childhood is... playing library with my little sister. We had each one of our books catalogued with checkout cards, and we would organize an entire library in our living room. Our long-suffering mother was our only patron, but she was willing to check out books all day so we could stamp the cards for new checkouts and reshelve the ones she returned.
