BYU employee since: 2008
My job at BYU is... dean of Undergraduate Education, overseeing campus-wide academic programs including general education, the honors program and first-year experience.
I’m currently working on... the roll-out of the new University 101 class for all our new first-year students and developing new robotics approaches to survey deep coral reefs in the Pacific.
I just finished reading… "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
I get most excited about my work when… I’m spending time on a Pacific island with students, appreciating the unique ecology and people of the region.
My favorite lecture to teach is… the biochemistry of love for Biology 100 students.
When I have 30 minutes of free time, you can find me… weeding the peppers and tomatoes in my garden.
My advice to incoming freshmen is… don’t hold back — be all in on the mission of BYU.
My advice to graduating seniors is… remember the love and sacrifice that went into your degree and go out and serve others with what you’ve learned.
My favorite spot on campus is… the stream trail just below the Maeser Building because you can sit quietly and be grounded — surrounded by the sound of running water and a little bit of wildness.
My most cherished memory at BYU is… sitting quietly in a fourth-floor study room in the old Widtsoe Building talking about environmental stewardship with Sharman Tullis, who I married a year after I graduated.
On Saturday mornings you’ll find me… mountain biking or gardening.
