Before BYU and Notre Dame line up across each other Saturday in Allegiant Stadium, the two schools will line up next to each other Friday afternoon in a much friendlier competition.

Tabbed the Shamrock Series Innovation Rally, three startup companies from BYU and four startup companies from Notre Dame will come together at the Bellagio Hotel for an investor showcase sponsored by the technology transfer offices at both schools.

“With tens of thousands of BYU and Notre Dame fans descending on Vegas this weekend for the game, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to showcase the impressive technology coming out of our universities,” said Dave Brown, manager in BYU’s Technology Transfer Office. “All seven of these companies have great potential and are perfect representations of the innovation happening at Notre Dame and BYU.”

The event was organized by Notre Dame’s IDEA Center and will give each startup company a window to present its technology to investors, alumni, entrepreneurs and anyone in the public who wants to stop by. Here's a quick summary of the companies on hand.

BYU startups:

Expandable Navigation Tech: This software company produces a type of elastic paper that enables users to smoothly navigate charts of hierarchical data. The technology allows users to scroll through a family tree, organizational chart, or other similar item, without turning pages. They’re currently focused on bringing solutions to family history applications.

ATCS: Advanced Technology Compliant Solutions builds origami-inspired folding bullet-proof police shields and barriers. Their technology, which has been featured in an episode of the popular PBS science documentary program Nova, is developed specifically with the goal in mind to save lives.

XO-NANO Smartfoam: XO-NANO makes a special foam that sends electrical signals to measure impacts and pressure. The technology can be used in anything from football helmets (to measure impact) to medical mattresses (to identify pressure points that could cause bed sores).

XONANO Smartfoam was developed at BYU when lead engineer Jake Merrill was a graduate student here.

Notre Dame startups:

DRONE RESPONSE: Open universal software platform to operate, collect data, and analyze the UAV market. Using advanced computer vision and AI, Drone Response aims to orchestrate cyber-physical systems for the public and private sectors.

INTREPID PHOENIX: A software app for recovery from substance abuse called Quality of Sobriety. The team at Intrepid Phoenix believe improving the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health of people in recovery increases their chances of abstinence.

WEB3SENSE: This blockchains analytics company is the go-to intelligence provider and compliance partner in the Web3 ecosystem. Web3Sense empowers clients with proprietary insights on NFT ecosystems to maximize and shape their engagement with their communities.

K2 BIOTECHNOLOGY VENTURES: By partnering with the IDEA Center, K2 develops and commercializes Notre Dame life science discoveries. This collaboration includes preclinical stage assets in oncology, Alzheimer's disease and rare and infectious diseases.

The company presentations will be open to the public starting at 3:00 p.m. Friday in Ballroom 6 of the Bellagio Hotel, 3600 Las Vegas Blvd.
