"Zoot Suit Sizzle!": BYU Ballroom Dance Company plans concerts April 6-7

“Zoot Suit Sizzle,” the 2007 concert by Brigham Young University’s 164-member Ballroom Dance Company, will be held at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday, April 6-7. There will also be a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday.

Tickets are $12, or $10 for the matinee. Floor seats are available for $25. For tickets, contact the Marriott Center Ticket Office at (801) 422-BYU1 or visit home.byu.edu/webapp/byutickets.

The concert will carry over all the energy of the recent U.S. DanceSport Championships and fill the Marriott Center once again with powerful music, bright lights, convincing costumes and this time, all the intensity of a 1940’s swing club.

“It’s going to be a party,” said Curt Holman, division director. “It’s going to everything you ever thought about swing multiplied a hundred times — Lindys, jives, triple-swings — although we’ll still have the traditional waltzes and lyrical pieces the company has become famous for.”

Blacklights, the work of invitational choreographers and a final-year concert blues theater performance by Judd Gines and Natalie Wakefield (U.S. Amateur Cabaret champions) will highlight this performance. These features include “Baliwood,” a new blacklight number; “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” a quickstep choreographed by Jean Marc Generaux and France Mousseau from Canada; “Laughter in the Rain,” a foxtrot by Toni Redpath (United States American Smooth champion); and “Doo Wah Diddy,” a new fast-paced cha-cha by Paul Richardson and Olya Rodionova (United States Latin finalists).

This summer, the Ballroom Dance Company will take its show, “Light Up the Night,” to England, Belgium, France, Italy, Switzerland and Spain.

For more information, contact Lee Wakefield, artistic director, or Curt Holman, division director, through the Department of Dance at (801) 422-5086 or visit http://pam.byu.edu.
