Woodwind Chamber Night at BYU April 1

The Brigham Young University School of Music presents Woodwind Chamber Night Thursday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

The performance is free and the public is welcome to attend.

The concert will feature music by Beethoven, Jacob, Françaix, Hindemith and Madeline Dring.

Christian Smith, one of the four faculty coaches for the Woodwind Chamber Night, said the music is representative mostly of the 20th century, and has largely been chosen by the students themselves.

"Chamber music gives students an opportunity to collaborate with other students," Smith said. "They take the lead, and choose the music."

The approximately 20 performing students have been coached by Smith, Geralyn Giovannetti, Jaren Hinckley and David Randall.

Smith also said the recital presents an opportunity to hear woodwind instruments in a pure form.

"Most of the concerts people know about on campus are those composed of large ensembles," he said. "It's not too often people get to hear the instruments in small numbers. In this concert, you get to hear the bassoon or the oboe or clarinet or French horn in an intimate setting where you can hear the voice of that instrument. You can't get that when the instruments are combined with large numbers of other instruments that you would find in an orchestral setting."
