Women's Research Institute plans November lectures

The Women's Research Institute at Brigham Young University will present two speakers in November as part of its Colloquium Lecture Series.

Shirley Klein will speak about listening to mothers' voices Thursday (Nov. 7) at noon in 325 Spencer W. Kimball Tower, and Lynn Callister will discuss acculturation in Mexican immigrant childbearing women Thursday, Nov. 21, at the same place and time. The public is welcome to attend.

Klein is the program chair of the Family Life and Home Economics Education Department at Brigham Young University. Her research interests include family life education in alternative settings. She has taught at several high schools, Arizona State University, the University of Utah, and BYU.

Callister has taught in the BYU School of Nursing for more than 12 years. In addition to receiving awards in nursing education and research, she pioneered the collecting of birth narrative of women in Central and North America, Scandinavia and the Middle East. Her research has been instrumental in analyzing the cultural meanings of childbirth.

The Women's Research Institute (WRI) is committed to the scholarly study of women's patterns of development, viewpoints and contributions, and involvement in societies throughout the world. The Womens' Studies Colloquium creates a fertile climate stimulating new collaborations, further research, and an intellectual dialogue within the Women's Studies community.

"Extraordinary research is being carried out at Brigham Young University and we welcome all to come and participate," says Institute Director Dr. Bonnie Ballif-Spanvill.
