William Barrett to present BYU devotional March 6

Brigham Young University's weekly campus devotional will feature William Barrett, professor in the Department of Computer Science, Tuesday, March 6, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center.

The devotional will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels. For rebroadcast information, visit byubroadcasting.org.

Barrett attended the University of Utah, where he received a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a doctoral degree in medical biophysics and computing. After graduating, he worked as a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health in the Division of Computer Research and Technology, where he worked with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

The professor has worked at BYU for 16 years and currently heads a research group focusing on computer vision, pattern recognition and image processing. His other projects include content-based document and image searching, compression and recognition, as well as the enhancement, recognition and extraction of information contained in digitized microfilm for family history research. Eventually, Barrett would like to make all the microfilm in the Granite Mountain Vault electronically accessible.
