"Why Married People are Healthier" topic of annual Hinckley lecture Feb. 11

Linda J. Waite of the University of Chicago will be the title speaker at the Sixth Annual Marjorie Pay Hinckley Endowed Chair Lecture Thursday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. in the Gordon B. Hinckley Alumni and Visitors Center Assembly Hall at Brigham Young University.

Her address will be titled “Marriage, Social Connections and Health: Why Married People are Healthier.” The public is welcome to attend.

Waite is the Lucy Flower Professor in Urban Sociology at the University of Chicago and director for the Center of Aging at the National Opinion Research Center. Her research focuses on how marriage changes people's behavior in ways that promote economic, emotional and physical well-being.

She also has studied cohabitation, the transition from cohabitation to marriage and the characteristics of cohabiting unions. One of her books, “The Case for Marriage: Why Married People are Healthier, Happier, and Better Off Financially,” received the 2000 Outstanding Book Award from the Coalition for Marriage, Family and Couples Education.

The Marjorie Pay Hinckley Endowed Chair in Social Work and the Social Sciences honors Hinckley’s lifelong commitment to strengthening home and family.
