Saturday, Sept. 1

MCAT Test Prep Course: The Conferences and Workshops MCAT Preparation Course will hold classes Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon until Nov. 3. Registration fees include an official MCAT guide, Princeton Review MCAT, Chem Tutor software and three official-proctored AAMC practice MCATs. Attendees can register online at testprep.byu.edu or by calling (801) 422-8925.   

"The Avengers": The Varsity Theater at the Wilkinson Student Center will be playing the movie “The Avengers” Sept. 1 and Sept. 7 and 8. Tickets are $1 each at the Wilkinson Student Center Information Desk.

Tuesday, Sept 4

BYU Devotional: BYU President Cecil O. Samuelson and his wife Sharon will welcome students back to campus during a devotional at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center. Wednesday, Sept. 5

GMAT Prep Course: The Conferences and Workshops GMAT Preparation Course will run from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays until Oct. 20. This course is designed to help participants prepare for the Graduate Management Admission Test. Attendees can register online at testprep.byu.edu or by calling (801) 422-8925.

David M. Kennedy Center Lecture: Laura Dupuy, executive director of the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy, will speak on “A Citizen Diplomat in Afghanistan” at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Acoustic Explosion: This is a free concert for BYU students featuring BYU students and their bands. Anyone is eligible to perform by submitting a demo tape to the Student Activities Board. It will be held at the Varsity Theatre at 7 p.m. Visit stab.byu.edu for more information.

Thursday, Sept. 6

BYUSA Involvapalooza: This is a two-day fair at Brigham Square by the Wilkinson Student Center where various student clubs and organizations will set up booths to publicize their clubs and recruit members. There will be free candy and popcorn as well as a rock wall for students to climb. The fair will run from noon to 2 p.m. each day.   

Political Affairs Lecture Series: Jennifer Hogge, donor liaison for LDS Philanthropies, will speak on “Career Reflections: Philanthropy” at 4 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Friday, Sept. 7

LaVell Edwards Stadium Farmer's Market:  The BYU Stadium Farmers Market will be open at the parking lot south of the LaVell Edwards Stadium from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The market will then be open on Thursdays through Oct. 25. The market sells locally grown fruits and vegetables and local baked goods. Humor U First Fall Show: Humor U, BYU's stand-up comedy club, starts off the new school year with another show of all-new material. Tickets are $5 at the door or $4 in advance at the Wilkinson Student Center Information Desk. Presale tickets go on sale Sept. 4. The show will be held at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. in 321 Karl G. Maeser Building.

BYUSA Fall Fest: BYUSA will host a fest filled with some of the country’s best traditions including jazz and dancing from 8 to 11 p.m. at Brigham Square. The first 500 people who participate in the event will be served free popcorn and J-Dawsgs. There will be an obstacle course, a ropes course, rock wall, dunk tank and Comedy Sportz.  Admission is free with a BYU ID.

Saturday, Sept. 8

LSAT Prep Course: The Conferences and Workshops LSAT Preparation Course will hold classes Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon until Nov. 14. Registration fees include PowerScore Logic Game Bible, PowerScore Reading Comprehension Bible, PowerScore Logical Reasoning Bible, Logical Reasoning and Logic Games workbooks and three binders with 30 total retired tests. BYU Devotional: Elder Steven E. Snow, a member of the Presidency of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be the campus devotional speaker in the Marriott Center at 11:05 a.m. The devotional will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels and online at byub.org. Planning for Financial Security at Retirement: “Planning for Financial Security at Retirement” is a BYU course (Business Management 205R), which is offered free to BYU full-time employees and their spouses. Scott Marsh, a financial planner and part-time faculty member in the Marriott School, will present this class through Oct. 16. More information is available at Ce.byu.edu/cw/financial.

Wednesday, Sept. 12

BYU’s Got Talent: This is an auditioned event held by the Student Activities Board, which is based on the show “America’s Got Talent.” Judges comment and finalists are chosen for the BYU’s Got Talent Finale at the end of the semester. The first audition will be in the Varsity Theater at 7 p.m. More information is available at stab.byu.edu.

Student Wellness Fair: Student Wellness will host its first annual Student Wellness Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wilkinson Student Center Garden Court. Services and opportunities that abound on campus to help student success will be featured in addition to fun activities and giveaways.

David M. Kennedy Center Ambassador Lecture: His Excellency Manuel Sager, ambassador to the United States for Switzerland, will speak on “Switzerland and the United States, a Partnership for Common Global Challenges” at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Children's Creative Dance: Participants in the BYU Children and Teens Creative Dance Program will receive training in dance technique to develop flexibility, coordination, strength, physical awareness and body control. Students will learn the basics of rhythm, participate in problem solving, create innovative compositions and develop excellent performance skills. Thursday, Sept. 13

Hospice and Palliative Care Conference: This conference, to be held at the BYU Conference Center, is for health-care professionals who work in hospice who want to learn more about hospice (physicians, RNs, social workers, CNAs, etc.) and/or who are interested in earning CEUs or CMEs. The conference is also for anyone who has seen the benefits of hospice through a family member or loved one or who would like to learn more. David M. Kennedy Center Ambassador Lecture: His Excellency Harold Winston Forsyth, ambassador to the United States for Peru, will speak on “Peruvian–U.S. Relations” at 11 a.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Political Affairs Lecture Series:  Stan Taylor, emeritus professor of political science at BYU, will speak on “Career Reflections: International Studies” at 4 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Martin B. Hickman Lecture: Gary Burlingame, a BYU professor of psychology, will speak on “Addressing Mental Health Funding Cuts with Evidence-based Interventions: The Promise of Small Group Treatments” at 7 p.m. in 250 Spencer W. Kimball Tower.  

Saturday, Sept. 15

BYU Salt Lake Center Tailgate Party: The BYU Salt Lake Center will host the first “Y vs. U Tailgate” at the Triad Center beginning at 1 p.m. The BYU and University of Utah football teams will play at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake that night at 8 p.m. The event will feature contests, prizes, food and access to a 22-foot inflatable screen with an HD projector where those in attendance can watch the football game. The contests and festivities will begin at approximately 6 p.m. The BYU Salt Lake Center campus is at the Triad Center, 345 West North Temple. Constitution Day Forum: Federal Judge Thomas B. Griffith, a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, will speak on “The Hard Work of Understanding the Constitution” at 11 a.m. in the Marriott Center. 

David M. Kennedy Center Lecture: Susan Sharp from the Institute of International Education will discuss Boren Scholarships at 3 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Wednesday, Sept. 19

Wiffleball Homerun Derby: The Student Activities Board will hold a Wiffleball homerun competition at 7 p.m. at Lee Lane between and the Harris Fine Art Center and the Wilkinson Student Center.

David M. Kennedy Center Lecture: Susan Hyde, assistant professor of political science and international affairs at Yale University, will speak on “The Pseudo-Democrat's Dilemma: Why Election Monitoring Became an International Norm” at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Thursday, Sept .20

Science Technology Engineering and Math Career Fair: This engineering and technology career fair will be held at the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom and Garden Court from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for all engineering majors, physical and math sciences, IS and ISYS.  More information is available at www.et.byu.edu/career-fair-information-0

David M. Kennedy Center Lecture: Paul Flesher, professor of religion studies at the University of Wyoming, will speak on “Are the People of Israel God’s 'Second Adam?' Adam, Israel and the Torah in the Ancient Jewish Targum Translations of the Adam and Eve Story” at 11 a.m. in 3104 Jesse Knight Building.

International Study Programs Fair: This is an introductory event for students who want to study abroad or do an internship overseas. Booths will be set up from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Marigold Quad east of the Herald R. Clark Building where students can learn about BYU's available international study opportunities, including study abroad, international internships, direct enrollment options and funding options. Grant Taggart Symposium: The annual Grant Taggart Symposium, which will run Sept. 20 and 21, comprises a selection of educational sessions for professional and practice development in the life insurance and financial services industry. Classes and workshops are specifically provided for agents, managers and staff and are a great way to obtain education licensing credits. More information is available at Ce.byu.edu/cw/gtaggart.

Wheatley Institute Forum: Robert O. Keohane, public and international affairs professor at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, will speak on “Political Science as a Vocation” at 4 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium. 

Friday, Sept .21

Latino Day: There will be multiple activities at the various campus areas throughout the day, culminating with a dance from 9 to 11 p.m. in the Wilkinson Student Center Garden Court. Attractions include food, dancing, cultural booths, and performances. See stab.byu.edu for more information.

Tuesday, Sept. 25

Student Fitness Center Open House: The Student Wellness Department is hosting an open house in 293 Smith Fieldhouse from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students can tour the new fitness center, meet BYU’s fitness trainers, measure their body fat percentage and BMI, get workout routines and enjoy a free green smoothie sample.

Humor U Dutch TV Show Taping: A Dutch television crew is coming to Provo to film a Humor U show for a miniseries about the 2012 election. Humor U invites everyone to this free event starting at 8 p.m. in 321 Karl G. Maeser Building, which will feature a headlining performance from Professor Maaten van Rossem. David M Kennedy Center Ambassador Lecture: His Excellency Peter Ammon, ambassador to the United States for Germany, will speak on “German-U.S. Relations” at 3 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Ping Pong Tourney: The Student Activities Board will hold a Ping Pong tournament at 7 p.m. at the Wilkinson Student Center Terrace. Anyone can come and play; brackets will be used to determine a winner.

David M. Kennedy Center Lecture: Carol C. Adelman, a senior fellow and director of the Center for Global Prosperity at the Hudson Institute, will speak on “Global Philanthropy and Beyond: Reinventing Foreign Assistance” at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Thursday, Sept .27

Political Affairs Lecture Series: John Dinkelman, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Nassau, the Bahamas, will speak on “Career Reflections: Diplomacy” at 4 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Saturday, Sept .29

ACT Prep Course: The Conferences and Workshops ACT Preparation Course will run from 9 a.m. to noon and continue every Saturday until Dec. 1. This course is for high school students preparing to take the ACT. Attendees can register online at testprep.byu.edu or by calling (801) 422-8925.

The Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum is closed for renovation and is not scheduled to open again until fall 2013.

Expanded Dinosaur Exhibit: The BYU Museum of Paleontology, formerly the Earth Science Museum, was recently expanded to display most of its collection. Now with the new 5,000 square-foot addition, the museum features a replica of a 9-foot-long triceratops skull from Montana, dinosaur bones found last summer near Moab, a Cretaceous nest, dinosaur skeletons of a Camptosaurus and an Allosaurus and a mural of the Utah-Colorado region in the Jurassic Period. Visitors can touch real fossils and view them being prepared in the active laboratory. The museum, located at 1683 N. Canyon Road in Provo, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with extended “Family Night” hours Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call (801) 422-3680.

Planetarium Shows: The Royden G. Derrick Planetarium regularly offers Friday night shows hosted by the BYU Astronomical Society at 7 and 8 p.m. for $2 a person. The planetarium is located at N465 of the Eyring Science Center on campus, and tickets are available at the door beginning at 6:30 p.m. For more information and a complete schedule, visit planetarium.byu.edu.

New Anthropology Exhibit: The Museum of Peoples and Cultures recently opened the exhibit “Entwined: A Vibrant Heritage of the Modern Maya,” which teaches about an ancient skill that has carried on through the generations. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. For more information, call (801) 422-0020 or visit mpc.byu.edu.

Stories from Around the World: The Museum of Peoples and Cultures is now featuring a story time for toddlers and preschoolers every Friday at 11 a.m. during the school year. The program is free with new stories and a new culture each week. The museum is located on 700 North 100 East in Provo. Each week, folktales will help children to explore elements – like music, clothing and families – that cultures throughout the globe share. Children will hear the stories as they sit surrounded by artifacts that are held in the museum’s galleries.  For more information, call (801) 422-0020 or visit mpc.byu.edu.

Free Campus Tours: Complimentary tours of the BYU campus are available for students, staff, faculty, prospective students, alumni and visitors weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gordon B. Free Exhibit Tours: BYU’s “Education in Zion” exhibit in the Joseph F. Smith Building now offers daily tours Monday through Friday at 1 p.m. in addition to regular hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, with extended hours on Monday and Wednesday evenings until 9 p.m. Tours begin in the east-wing lobby on the main floor of the Joseph F. Smith Building. The gallery traces the history of education in LDS culture and showcases art from local artists and BYU students. Visit lib.byu.edu/sites/educationinzion for more information. Free Family History Classes: The Family History Library at the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU offers free family history classes the second and fourth Sunday of each month. The classes begin at 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The library’s family history resources and consultants are available from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on these Sundays. Free Study Help Workshops: The Career and Academic Success Center at BYU offers classes on test preparation, stress management and time management. Students can attend classes to improve their academic, career and life skills. All workshops are 50 minutes long and are held in 2590 Wilkinson Student Center. BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.

BYU team helps create diagnostic tool that achieves accuracy of PCR tests with faster, simpler nanopore system

A new diagnostic tool developed by Brigham Young University and UC Santa Cruz researchers can test for SARS-CoV-2 and Zika virus with the same or better accuracy as high-precision PCR tests in a matter of hours.
