Entrepreneurship Week Kickoff: Students can learn about the various entrepreneurship events going on throughout the week and hear from successful student entrepreneurs from the past including Dave Bateman (Property Solutions), Garrett Gee (Scan), and Mick Hagen (Zinch & Undrip), who have created great companies, wealth and personal freedom. Tuesday, Oct. 2

BYU Devotional: Ray Huntington, professor of Religious Education, will give an address titled “A Grateful Heart” in a devotional Tuesday, Oct 2, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center. Wednesday, Oct. 3

David M. Kennedy Center Lecture: Gretchen Morgenson, assistant business and financial editor and columnist at the New York Times, will speak on “The Next Global Financial Crisis” at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

David M. Kennedy Center Lecture: Rob McFarland and Daryl Lee, BYU associate professors at German studies and French studies respectively, will speak on “Flowers of Evil, Wings of Desire: Representing Paris and Berlin” at 4 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Entrepreneur & Venture Ecosystem Networking Night: This event, hosted by the BYU Rollins Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology, will showcase the resources available in the Utah entrepreneurial ecosystem. Organizations from around the state will be represented and networking opportunities will abound. It will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Gordon B. Hinckley Alumni and Visitors Center. Acoustic Explosion:This is a free concert for BYU students featuring BYU students and their bands. It will be held at the Varsity Theater at 7 p.m. Anyone is eligible to perform. Audition by submitting a demo tape to the Student Activities Board. More information is available at stab.byu.edu.

The Mobile App Competition Kickoff: This competition, hosted by the Rollins Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology at BYU, is a chance for students to showcase their polished skills as mobile app developers and continue to hone current skills while expanding their repertoire into this popular space. The competition is open to all major mobile OS platforms. This kickoff meeting will explain how the competition is structured and to find other people to make a team. David M. Kennedy Center Lecture: Amy Froide, associate professor of history, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will speak on “Why History Matters: Gender and Investing in the Stock Market in the 18th Century and Today” at 11 a.m. in B002 Joseph Fielding Smith Building.

David M. Kennedy Center Ambassador Lecture: His Excellency Jose L. Cuisia, Jr., ambassador to the United States for Philippines, will speak on “The Philippines: Forging a Future of Peace and Prosperity” at 4 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Entrepreneurship Week Panels: Students will have an opportunity to listen to experienced entrepreneurs who have “been there, done that” share their insights on different entrepreneurial topics including “Building the Perfect Team” and “Protecting Your Idea.” It will be held from 4 to 5:15 p.m. at various locations in the N. Miller NVC Big Idea Competition/ Investor Day: A few of last year's teams will pitch their ventures to a group of investors followed by 60-second rapid fire idea pitches from this year's teams in the Big Idea Competition. Girls Night Out: This event, which is hosted by BYU’s Museum of Peoples and Cultures, will have service projects, take-home crafts, refreshments and a special presentation about uplifting others and yourself through meaningful service. It will be held at the museum building from 6 to 8 p.m., during the Priesthood Session of LDS General Conference. Idealism in the Novel: Thomas Pavel, University of Chicago, will give a presentation that is based on the forthcoming English version of his bookLa Pensée du roman(The Thinking Novel, 2003). He will address the various ways of idealizing characters and their behavior from the Greek novel to modern times. The lecture will start at 4 p.m. in B190 Josheph F. Smith Building. It is sponsored by the BYU Department of French and Italian.

Mental Health Services Awareness Night (for ecclesiastical leaders): This is a free evening workshop for local leaders to outline and explain the counseling and other resources available in Utah County to help people dealing with mental or emotional conditions. The workshop includes classroom presentations as well as informational booths from more than 30 local agencies. Mystery Dinner Date Night: The BYU’s Museum of Peoples and Cultures invites couples to be part of the mystery of “The Disappearance of the Weaving Swords.” This date night consists of an evening at the museum where couples will not only be involved in the solving of a crime, but possibly be guilty of committing one. The event will be held at the museum on both Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26 and 27, at 7 p.m. The date night costs $24 per couple (includes dinner and dessert) and tickets will be available at the Wilkinson Student Center information desk beginning Monday, Oct. 22. Dance Assembly: The Brigham Young University Department of Dance performing groups will perform in the assembly at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the Marriott Center. The assembly will not be broadcast.

Halloween Spooktacular: This event is for the children and grandchildren of BYU faculty and staff and is held by the Student Activities Board. Booths are set up for trick or treating, and games are provided as well. It will be held at the Wilkinson Student Center Terrace at 5 p.m. More information is available at stab.byu.edu.

The Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum is closed for renovation and is not scheduled to open again until fall 2013.

Expanded Dinosaur Exhibit:The BYU Museum of Paleontology, formerly the Earth Science Museum, was recently expanded to display most of its collection. Now with the new 5,000 square-foot addition, the museum features a replica of a 9-foot long triceratops skull from Montana, dinosaur bones found last summer near Moab, a Cretaceous period nest, dinosaur skeletons of a Camptosaurus and Allosaurus, and a mural of the Utah-Colorado region during the Jurassic Period. Visitors can touch real fossils and view them being prepared in the active laboratory. The museum, located at 1683 N. Canyon Road in Provo, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with extended “Family Night” hours Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call (801) 422-3680.

Planetarium Shows: The Royden G. Derrick Planetarium regularly offers Friday night shows hosted by the BYU Astronomical Society at 7 and 8 p.m. for $2 a person. The planetarium is located at N465 of the Eyring Science Center on campus, and tickets are available at the door beginning at 6:30 p.m. For more information and a complete schedule, visit planetarium.byu.edu.

New Anthropology Exhibit: The Museum of Peoples and Cultures recently opened the exhibit titled “Entwined: A Vibrant Heritage of the Modern Maya,” which teaches about textile creation, a tradition that has carried on through the generations. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. For more information, call (801) 422-0020 or visit mpc.byu.edu.

Stories from Around the World: The Museum of Peoples and Cultures is now featuring a story time for toddlers and preschoolers every Friday at 11 a.m. during the school year. The program is free with new stories and a new culture each week. The museum is located on 700 North 100 East in Provo. Each week, folktales will help children to explore elements – like music, clothing and families – that cultures throughout the globe share. Children will hear the stories as they sit surrounded by artifacts that are held in the museum’s galleries. For more information, call (801) 422-0020 or visit mpc.byu.edu.

Free Campus Tours: Complimentary tours of the BYU campus are available for students, staff, faculty, prospective students, alumni and visitors weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gordon B. Free Exhibit Tours: BYU’s “Education in Zion” exhibit in the Joseph F. Smith Building now offers daily tours Monday through Friday at 1 p.m. in addition to regular hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and extended hours on Monday and Wednesday until 9 p.m. Tours begin in the east-wing lobby on the main floor of the Joseph F. Smith Building. The gallery traces the history of education in LDS culture and showcases art from local artists and BYU students. Visit lib.byu.edu/sites/educationinzion for more information. Free Family History Classes: The Family History Library at the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU offers free family history classes the second and fourth Sunday of each month. The classes begin at 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The library’s family history resources and consultants are available from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on these Sundays. Free Study Help Workshops: The Career and Academic Success Center at BYU offers classes on test preparation, stress management and time management. Students can attend classes to improve their academic, career and life skills. All workshops are 50 minutes long and are held in 2590 Wilkinson Student Center.
