Tuesday, Oct. 2

The Ballroom Dance Company, Dancers’ Company, Theatre Ballet, Cougarettes and International Folk Dance Ensemble will present a dance performance assembly at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center. Wednesday, Oct. 3

Thousands of BYU students and alumni will meet with nearly 170 potential employers at the Fall 2007 Career and Internship Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom, Garden Court and East Lounge. Students of all academic disciplines are encouraged to bring current resumes and dress in a professional manner. Because the event caters to students interested in internships and careers, many employers will offer summer work experience as well as full-time positions. Thursday, Oct. 4

The semiannual Country Dance kicks off with expert instruction from 8:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom. The dance begins at 9 p.m. Tickets are $2 in advance or $3 at the door with a BYU ID. For guests or those without a BYU ID, the cost is $4. Tickets can be purchased at the WSC Info Desk.

The College of Family, Home and Social Sciences will present a Social Work Guest Lecture featuring Lorraine Gutierrez, a professor of social work and psychology at the University of Michigan, who will speak on “Social Justice and Social Welfare in the 21st Century: Human Services Issues” at 1:30 p.m. in 5538 Wilkinson Student Center. Brad Westwood, department chair of L. Tom Perry Special Collections at the Harold B. Lee Library, will present “2-D Dreams and 3-D Realities:  Campus Planning and Architecture at BYU, 1875-1975” from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Lee Library Auditorium. A Women’s Studies Colloquium at noon in 4186 Joseph F. Smith Building will feature Valerie Hudson of the Political Science Department, who will introduce "The WomanStats Database," the most comprehensive compilation of information on the status of women in the world. An opening reception for the Nature Art Show will be held in the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum at 7 p.m. The reception and exhibit are free and the public is invited to attend. The exhibit is display of artwork with themes of nature and its beauty. Participants for the judged and juried show will be drawn from a number of Utah’s professional and amateur artists. The Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum invites children ages 5 through 12 to participate in an “Arctic Alaska Safari” as part of its Saturday Safari program. The event will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The cost is $12 for the first child and $10 for each additional child in the same family. The museum also invites anyone ages 12 and older (including adults) to learn about the living world around us. Blaine Furniss will teach participants about “Trees and Shrubs.” The cost is $10 and includes a “Tree Tour of BYU” guide. The BYU Chemistry and Biochemistry Department and the Central Utah Section of the American Chemical Society are sponsoring several activities during National Chemistry Week. The demonstrations are proven crowd-pleasers, illustrating important principles of chemistry. Chemical magic shows will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday and from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday in W111 Ezra Taft Benson Building. Tickets are free and all teachers, students, parents, scout troops and members of the general public are invited to attend. Research posters will be on display in the lobby on Friday. A Women’s Studies Colloquium in 4186 Joseph F. Smith Building at noon will host the Women's Research Institute's Distinguished Scholar Award recipient, Cheryl Preston of the J. Reuben Clark Law School. Nearly 50 internship agencies will network with students at the School of Family Life Internship Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Wilkinson Student Center Garden Court. Students in all Marriage Family Human Development (MFHD) and Home Family Living (HFL) emphases are encouraged to dress professionally and bring current resumes. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26-27

Elder Joe J. Christensen, emeritus General Authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be the keynote speaker at the 36th annual Sidney B. Sperry Symposium on the Scriptures. This year’s symposium is titled “Living the Book of Mormon: Abiding by its Precepts.” The keynote address by Elder Christensen, “Abiding by Its Precepts,” will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in the Joseph Smith Building Auditorium. Lectures will follow on Friday evening and Saturday morning. The closing session will feature Robert L. Millet, former dean of Religious Education at BYU, speaking on “The Most Correct Book: Joseph Smith’s Appraisal of the Book of Mormon.” Admission is free and registration is not required. Wednesday, Oct. 31

James D'Arc, curator of the BYU Motion Picture Archive, will introduce the film “Sergeants 3” (1962) at 3 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium. The film stars Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Sammy Davis Jr. and Joey Bishop and was filmed in southern Utah. The film is 112 minutes long.

Through the generosity of Fred and Sue Morris of Salt Lake City, the world's most complete collection of waterfowl and pheasants is being exhibited as part of the Monte L. Bean Museum of Life Sciences’ permanent collection. The Don Cox Wildlife Collection is on display in the third floor exhibit gallery. Other exhibits on display include a butterfly exhibit and a shell exhibit, "Ecosystem Dioramas," "Africa: A Diverse Continent" and "Synoptic Collections of Vertebrate Animals.” Gallery shows for the public are conducted daily on the following schedule: Mondays, Reptiles, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.; Tuesdays, Adaptations, 7:30 p.m.; Wednesdays, Utah Animals and Plants, 7:30 p.m.; Thursdays, Deer Diversity, 7:30 p.m.; Fridays, Invertebrates, 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays, Reptiles, 1 p.m. The museum, located southeast of the Marriott Center, is open Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (801) 422-5051 or visit mlbean.byu.edu.

The Museum of Peoples and Cultures, located at 700 North 100 East in Provo, presents a new exhibit, “Touching the Past: Traditions of Casas Grandes.” This exhibit focuses on the lifestyle and rituals of the Casas Grandes people through a display of their beautiful pottery and figurines. Another exhibit, “Seeking the Divine: Ritual, Prayer and Celebration,” explores rituals and ceremonies that empower people to seek the divine and exhibits more than 150 artifacts from countries around the world. The museum offers children’s programs as well as various date night and cultural events. Teaching kits and tours are available and volunteers are always welcome. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Hours are extended until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays for fall and winter semesters. For more information, call (801) 422-0020 or visit mpc.byu.edu.

The Earth Science Museum is featuring a mounted skeleton of a 120-million-year-old sauropod dinosaur that the museum will soon name. This exhibit is only one of many dinosaur and fossil mammal skeletons and skulls on display. Other unique exhibits include Torvosaurus tanneri, a large carnivorous dinosaur, as well two fully-mounted skeletons of a Camptosaurus and an Allosaurus, a giant ground sloth, a mural of the Utah-Colorado region in the Jurassic period and a 150 million-year-old dinosaur egg. Visitors may touch real fossils and peer into the window of the preparation lab to watch museum personnel prepare fossil bones of new, unnamed dinosaurs. Admission is free. The Earth Science Museum is located at 1683 N Canyon Road and is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  For more information, call (801) 422-3680.

BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
