What’s New at BYU for May 2013

Thursday and Friday, May 2-3

Women’s Conference: The 2013 BYU Women’s Conference, co-sponsored by the Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will have more than 200 presenters sharing their perspectives and insights on a variety of topics of interest and concern to women of all ages. The conference also includes service projects, an instant choir, book signings and an evening concert. President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the First Presidency of the Church, will speak at the Friday afternoon closing session. Ticket prices are $52 for the full conference or $32 for a single day. In-person registration is available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Harman Continuing Education Building lobby at BYU and on the days of the conference beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Marriott Center. GRE Prep Course: A prep course offered through BYU to help students prepare to take the GRE exam will run through June 4. More information about registration is available at testprep.byu.edu.

GMAT Prep Course: A prep course offered through BYU to help students prepare to take the GMAT exam will run through June 26. More information about registration is available at testprep.byu.edu.

Tuesday, May 7

University Devotional: Ryan Holmes, director of Digital Media Group at BYU Broadcasting, will be the campus devotional speaker at 11:05 a.m. in the Joseph Smith Auditorium. His address is titled "The Truth of All Things.” The devotional will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels and online at byutv.org. Archived devotionals are available at speeches.byu.edu.  Spring term devotionals will also be broadcast live on campus at W-112 Ezra Taft Benson Building, 250 Spencer W. Kimball Tower and the Wilkinson Student Center Varsity Theater.

Wednesday, May 8

The New Horizons Orchestra: The New Horizons Orchestra creates an opportunity for adults to begin studying a musical instrument. Participants must provide their own instrument (violin, viola, cello or bass) and a folding music stand. The orchestra is directed by Andrew Dabczynski, BYU professor of music education. Saturday, May 11

“Utah’s Heritage: Rich and Alive”: This popular annual event hosted by the Museum of Peoples and Cultures will be held from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. as families and students are invited to enjoy the educational activities, entertainment and tasty treats. The street in front of the museum will be closed off to make room for the celebration. The public will have the chance to learn about local archaeology through performances, interactive games and activities, and demonstrations from experts. Student and professional archaeologists will be on hand to share artifacts and stories from recent excavations in Utah Valley. Admission is free. For more information, visit facebook.com/byu.mpc. LSAT Prep Course: A prep course offered through BYU to help students prepare to take the LSAT exam will go through July 23. More information about registration is available at testprep.byu.edu.

University Forum: Mike Pinegar, professor of finance at the Marriott Business School, will deliver the annual Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecture, the university’s highest faculty honor, at the campus forum at 11:05 a.m. in the Joseph Smith Auditorium. Wednesday, May 22

Children's Creative Dance: This spring program is a beginning dance session available to new students in the program and serves as an introduction to the fall/winter program. The program is a good way for current students to stimulate improvement over the summer. Classes for three-year-olds are 45 minutes in length. All other classes are one hour. Classes are scheduled for May 24-June 21 and will be held in the Richards Building. Online registration is available at ce.byu.edu/cw/dancecamps/children_creative.php.

Pre-ACSM Poster Session: The American College of Sports Medicine is a prestigious professional organization where faculty and students can present their research each year. This will be the first pre-ACSM poster session arranged by BYU and will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 106 Richards Building.

Friday, May 31

MPC Date Night: The Museum of Peoples and Cultures will be hosting its “Sphinxes and Sweethearts” date night, which will offer fun prizes, learning experiences and Mediterranean refreshments. Couples will have the chance to win prizes through different activities including a mummy-wrapping race, a set of three different games (Pyramid, Egyptian Balderdash and “Matching of the Gods”), and painting hieroglyphics. All Month

The Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum is closed for renovation and is not scheduled to reopen until spring 2014.

Dinosaur Exhibit: The BYU Museum of Paleontology, formerly the Earth Science Museum, was recently expanded to display most of its collection. Now with the new 5,000 square-foot addition, the museum features a replica of a 9-foot long triceratops skull from Montana, dinosaur bones found last summer near Moab, a Cretaceous period nest, dinosaur skeletons of a Camptosaurus and Allosaurus, and a mural of the Utah-Colorado region during the Jurassic Period. Visitors can touch real fossils and view them being prepared in the active laboratory. The museum, located at 1683 N. Canyon Road in Provo, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with extended “Family Night” hours Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call (801) 422-3680.

Planetarium Shows: The Royden G. Derrick Planetarium regularly offers Friday night shows hosted by the BYU Astronomical Society at 7 and 8 p.m. for $2 a person. The planetarium is located at N465 of the Eyring Science Center on campus, and tickets are available at the door beginning at 6:30 p.m. For more information and a complete schedule, visit planetarium.byu.edu.

Anthropology Exhibit: The Museum of Peoples and Cultures opened the exhibit titled “Entwined: A Vibrant Heritage of the Modern Maya,” which teaches about textile creation, a tradition that has carried on through the generations. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. For more information, call (801) 422-0020 or visit mpc.byu.edu.

Stories from Around the World: The Museum of Peoples and Cultures is now featuring a story time for toddlers and preschoolers every Friday at 11 a.m. during the school year. The program is free with new stories and a new culture each week. The museum is located on 700 North 100 East in Provo. Each week, folktales will help children to explore elements – like music, clothing and families – that cultures throughout the globe share. Children will hear the stories as they sit surrounded by artifacts that are held in the museum’s galleries. For more information, call (801) 422-0020 or visit mpc.byu.edu.

Free Campus Tours: Complimentary tours of the BYU campus are available for students, staff, faculty, prospective students, alumni and visitors weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gordon B. Free Exhibit Tours: BYU’s “Education in Zion” exhibit in the Joseph F. Smith Building now offers daily tours Monday through Friday at 1 p.m. in addition to regular hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and extended hours on Monday and Wednesday until 9 p.m. Tours begin in the east-wing lobby on the main floor of the Joseph F. Smith Building. The gallery traces the history of education in LDS culture and showcases art from local artists and BYU students. Visit lib.byu.edu/sites/educationinzionfor more information. The gallery recently opened a new exhibition showcasing some of the better-known politicians who have visited the university in the past.

Free Family History Classes: The Family History Library at the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU offers free family history classes the second and fourth Sunday of each month. Classes begin at 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The library’s family history resources and consultants are available from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on these Sundays. Free Study Help Workshops: The Career and Academic Success Center at BYU offers classes on test preparation, stress management and time management. Students can attend classes to improve their academic, career and life skills. All workshops are 50 minutes long and are held in 2590 Wilkinson Student Center.
