Roger Schank, president of Socratic Arts and a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, will speak on “The Story-Centered Curriculum” at a free seminar for all faculty and students from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in 115 David O. McKay Building.

The Ninth Annual Utah Education Law and Policy Institute, a one-day conference on legal topics of interest to Utah's education community, will be held at the BYU Conference Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The institute is designed and priced to be a service for educators, educational administrators, school board members, legal practitioners, parents and students. The cost for the all‑day conference, which includes a luncheon and luncheon speaker, is $35 in advance. Registration is $40 on the day of the conference, which may not include lunch. BYU Women’s Services and Resources will host its fourth annual “Breaking the Silence: 5K Race Against Abuse and Pornography” at 8 a.m. starting in the Richards Building quad. No entry fee is required, but runners must register by calling (801) 422-4877, e-mailing wsr@byu.edu, visiting 3326 Wilkinson Center or arriving at 7 a.m. the day of the race. The 2008 Arts Express Summer Elementary Arts Education Conference, a three-day conference for teachers and administrators dedicated to arts education, will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Timberline Middle School, 500 W Canyon Crest Road, Alpine. Registration for the first day of the conference is open to all people interested in expanding their understanding of the role of arts in education, and includes admission to the keynote address by Anne Green Gilbert, designer of the BrainDance technique and theory. The second and third days are specifically for elementary school teachers, with classes offered in dance, drama, media arts, music, visual arts and integration. Full-conference registration is $85, or $55 for attendees from BYU A.R.T.S. Partnership school districts. BYU in-service credits (1.5) are available for an additional $40. The Ninth Annual Writing and Illustrating for Young Readers Workshop will be held in the BYU Conference Center. This intensive, five-day workshop is for beginning to advanced writers and illustrators, with tutoring in small-group sessions by published authors and artists. Registration for the conference is $460, or $120 for afternoons only, 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both registration options include a ticket to the conference banquet. All Month

The Harold B. Lee Library is hosting an exhibit of John Marshall's work. Marshall was instrumental in developing the industrial design program at BYU. “John Marshall: A Tribute” features items from his days designing for Hewlett Packard, work from his 41 years at BYU and his more recent landscape paintings. The exhibit, which is open during library hours, is located in the Hallway Gallery on the second floor of the library and will be on display through June 30.
