What's New at BYU in July

Friday, July 6

A new exhibition at BYU's Museum of Art titled "Splendor and Spectacle: Images of Dance from Court Ballet to Broadway" will open in the Warren and Alice Jones and the Paul and Betty Boshard galleries on the museum's lower level. Admission to the exhibition is free of charge. The exhibition will remain on display through Tuesday, January 1, 2008.

Tuesday, July 10

The university's weekly devotional will feature Tina Dyches of the Counseling Psychology and Special Education Department at 11:05 a.m. in the Joseph Smith Building Auditorium. Thursday and Friday, July 12 and 13

The BYU Symposium on Books for Young Readers will feature nationally acclaimed authors and illustrators and is open to librarians, teachers, parents and anyone who enjoys children's literature. Friday, July 13

BYU's Events Management Team is sponsoring a free outdoor movie at the Spencer W. Kimball Tower quad. The movie will be "Meet the Robinsons" and will start at dusk.

Friday and Saturday, July 13 and 14

BYU will host the third annual English Horn Master Class with Carolyn Hove. The workshop will help individuals improve and enhance their English horn-playing skills for performance or teaching. The cost varies from $445 for full participation, $275 for full auditor participation and $110 for one-day auditor participation. Friday, July 20

The Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum will offer a free movie night in the museum's auditorium at 6:30 p.m. The movie shown will be "Night at the Museum." Families and children of all ages are welcome to attend.

Thursday, July 26

The Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum will host a Nature Experienceship for children aged 12 and up. The afternoon, beginning at 1 p.m., will be spent outside with Shawn Clark learning about the topic, "Insects." The cost is $10 per person and will last from two to three hours.

Saturday, July 28

BYU Events Management is sponsoring a pinewood derby race for all interested racers of any age at 10 a.m. The cost is $7, which includes the car and tools. First-place prize will be $100, second-place prize will be $50 and third-place prize will be $25. Awards of $20 will also be given for "Most Creative," "Best in Show," "Best Finish," "Most BYU," "My Major on Wheels" and "Best Fuel Economy." During spring and summer terms, Women's Services and Resources will sponsor "Real Women, Reel World," a film series addressing women's issues, Mondays at noon in 3326 Wilkinson Student Center. Women's Services and Resources will host "Revitalizing Yoga" Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. in 3326 Wilkinson Student Center during spring and summer terms. Every Wednesday except July 4, the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum will host a Discovery Reading event where the public is invited to hear stories about animals and nature read by a professional storyteller. The event will be at the museum at 11 a.m. and there is no charge.

Every Saturday except July 7, the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum invites children ages 5 through 12 to come to the museum and learn about animals from all over the world by participating in their Saturday Safari program. The events will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The cost is $12 for the first child and $10 for each additional child in the same family.

Each week, with the exception of the first week of July, the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum will host a Wildlife Adventure for children ages 6 through 12. Each week-long adventure will consist of sessions held on Tuesday and Thursday, which will be spent at the museum and on field trips, respectively. The cost is $35 per child per week-long adventure.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
