What's New at BYU for August 2007

Wednesday, Aug. 1

The David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies will host a Global Awareness lecture with Brian Reynolds, second secretary/vice consul for the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, India, at noon in 238 Harold R. Clark Building. The topic will be “China and India Rising: The End of American Economic Supremacy?” Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Thursday, Aug. 2

The third annual BYU Women's Football Clinic will welcome women ages 14 and up from 5 until 9 p.m. The camp will include chalk talk with BYU coaches, uniform and equipment demonstrations, a BYU player panel, a rules seminar with Mountain West Conference game officials and field skill instruction. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 3-4

Dollar Nights at the Varsity Theater will feature “Bridge to Terabithia” at 7 and 9:15 p.m. each night.

Saturday, Aug. 4

The final outing for "Women in the Wilderness," a summer-long activity series hosted by BYU Women's Services and Resources, will be morning bike ride. For more information, contact Women's Services and Resources at (801) 422-4877.

Tuesday, Aug. 7

The university's weekly devotional will feature Larry EchoHawk, professor of law, at 11:05 a.m. in the Joseph Smith Building Auditorium. The devotional will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels. For rebroadcast information, visit byubroadcasting.org.

Tuesday and Thursday, Aug. 7 and 9

The Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum will host a Wildlife Adventure for children ages 6 through 12. This week-long “Cave Spelunking” activity will consist of sessions held on Tuesday and Thursday, which will be spent at the museum and on a field trip, respectively. The cost is $35 per child.

Wednesday, Aug. 8

The BYU Student Activities Board will host a swap meet at Brigham Square from 6 to 8 p.m. You must be a student to sell, but anyone can come and shop. For more information, contact the Student Activities Board at (801) 422-3122.

Thursday, Aug. 9

A Master of Social Work Applicant Open House will be held in 2198 Joseph F. Smith Building from 11 a.m. to noon. All the details regarding the application process will be discussed.

Friday and Saturday, Aug. 10-11

Dollar Nights at the Varsity Theater will feature “Bridge to Terabithia” at 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. each night.

The International Cinema will present the New Zealand film “Whale Rider” at 8:30 p.m. in the Joseph F. Smith Building courtyard. Seating for the outdoor screening is limited, but there is plenty of room for picnic-style viewing. Admission is free.

Saturday, Aug. 11

The Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum invites children ages 5 through 12 to come to the museum and participate in an “Amazonian Adventure” as part of its Saturday Safari program. The event will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The cost is $12 for the first child and $10 for each additional child in the same family.

Thursday, Aug. 16

BYU Commencement activities will begin at 3:25 p.m with the academic processional departing from the Abraham O. Smoot Administration Building parking lots. The Commencement exercises at the Marriott Center will begin at 4 p.m.

Brigham Young University will host the 85th annual Campus Education Week, possibly the largest continuing education program of its type in the world, at various locations across the BYU campus. For more information, visit educationweek.byu.edu.

The Education Week devotional will begin at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center featuring Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. BYU’s Annual University Conference for all faculty and staff will follow the theme, “Education for Eternity.” The joint meeting for all university personnel, retirees and partners with President Cecil O. All Month

Every Wednesday, the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum will host a Discovery Reading event where the public is invited to hear stories about animals and nature read by a professional storyteller. The event will be at the museum at 11 a.m. and there is no charge.

Latter-day Saint artist Minerva Teichert’s “Pageants in Paint” is on view at the BYU Museum of Art. The exhibition examines how the American mural and pageantry movements influenced Teichert’s artistic production through 47 of her large-scale narrative murals. The exhibition will be available for viewing through Monday, May 26, 2008. Admission is free.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
