West African war crimes topic for BYU Global Awareness lecture April 5

“Dancing with the Devil—Taking on West Africa's Warlord's” will be presented by David M. Crane, a distinguished visiting professor of law at Syracuse University, during a Global Awareness Lecture on Wednesday, April 5, at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building at Brigham Young University.

Crane was appointed a distinguished visiting professor of law at Syracuse University College of Law in summer 2005, where he teaches international criminal, international, and national security law. Additionally, he is a member of the faculty of the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism, a joint venture with the Maxwell School of Public Citizenship at Syracuse University.

Prior to that, Crane was appointed by Secretary General Kofi Annan in April 2002 as the first American since Justice Robert Jackson and Telford Taylor at Nuremberg in 1945 to be the chief prosecutor of an international war crimes tribunal.

Previously, he served more than 30 years with the U.S. government, holding key positions including Senior Inspector General with the Department of Defense, Assistant General Counsel of the Defense Intelligence Agency, and Waldemar A. Solf Professor of International Law at the United States Army Judge Advocate General’s School.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
