War classic "Since You Went Away" screened at BYU film series May 27

The Special Collections Motion Picture Archives Film Series at Brigham Young University will present a special Memorial Day screening of the war classic "Since You Went Away" Thursday, May 27, at 7 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium.

The public is invited to attend this free event.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and early arrival in encouraged as seating is strictly limited. Children eight years-old or older are welcome. No food or drink is permitted in the auditorium.

The movie tells the story of Anne Hilton, whose husband goes off to war and who must find ways of coping with shortages and stress along with daughters Jane and Brig.

Claudette Colbert stars as Anne, Joseph Cotten portrays a family friend, while Jennifer Jones is Jane and Shirley Temple plays Brig.

The movie earned eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor. It won an academy award for Best Score.

"Since You Went Away," released in 1944, was the first film from David O. Seznick after his 1939 epic blockbuster "Gone With the Wind."

Seznick wanted to do something unique for the war effort and chose to focus on the challenges of families on the home front whose sons and fathers had gone off to war.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
