Wall burger wins Best of State

Located in the southeast corner of the first floor of the Wilkinson Center lies The Wall — a perfect destination for good music, fun people and great food. So great, in fact, that the campus restaurant snagged this year’s Best Gourmet Burger at the 2017 Utah Best of State awards for its signature “Wall burger.”

The Wall burger has been around since the restaurant first opened in 2013, but it was Chef John Newman’s twist that clinched the title.

“Being a chef, I always want to have something that’s my own,” Newman said. “I always try to add something that isn’t the normal way someone else would make it.”

While the burger has all of the usual ingredients — buns, lettuce, cheese, tomato, onions and a beef patty — it’s the addition of two strips of crispy bacon, barbecue sauce and Newman’s secret sauce that make it really special.

The Best of State judging process consists of six separate surprise visits by different judges so The Wall’s staff had to be at the very best, which is the norm according to Newman.

“We want to make sure that everyone who comes through our door is treated well, respected and gets the best service that we can give them. That’s the goal.”

Judges award points based on service, atmosphere, taste and creativity.

The Wall is open Monday through Friday and rents out for special events. Check out their website for business hours and other menu options: http://thewall.byu.edu/.
