Voice of Africa to present dance concert at BYU Jan. 11

Brigham Young University’s Department of Dance will present “Waithera,” an original musical by guest performance group Voice of Africa Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theatre at the Richards Building.

Tickets cost $6 each and are available by phone at (801) 422-4322, online at arts.byu.edu/tickets or at the Fine Arts Ticket Office at C-358 Harris Fine Arts Center Tickets will also be sold at the door if still available.

“Waithera” is named after a Kenyan woman who embarks on a journey to save her husband, a warrior taken captive by British colonists, shortly after their marriage. As Waithera finds her village in shambles and goes in search of her love, audience members will be treated to dancing, drums, vibrant costumes and even some humor.

“The play has a little bit of comedy, but lots of color, dance and emotion,” said Voice of Africa (VOACA) co-founder Christopher Chileshe. “This is something you won’t get to see anywhere else.”

VOACA is a local, 15-member performing group that celebrates African culture through dance, music and song. The troupe was co-founded by Christopher Chileshe of Zimbabwe to educate Utah County about the struggles, beauty and passion of Africa.

Four of the group’s 15 members are BYU alumni, while two others are current BYU students. The group supports its members in obtaining their education by providing scholarships through fundraising events and performances.

For more information about the play or Voice of Africa, contact Christopher Chileshe at (801) 471-6631 or Christopher@thevoaca.com, or visit the website at www.thevoaca.com.
