Violist LaDonna Smith to present improvisational recital Feb. 11 at BYU

Brigham Young University’s School of Music and the Laycock Center for Creative Collaboration in the Arts present LaDonna Smith, violist and composer, in concert Thursday, Feb. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Smith will be performing with faculty member Christian Asplund and the BYU Group for Experimental Music in concert. Admission is free.

A native of Birmingham, Ala., Smith has created a style of improvisation on violin and viola that is uniquely her own. Alternating classical and extended techniques, she explores her instrument, painting scenarios and sound pictures as she plays.

As a performer, her travels have taken her to Europe, the former USSR, Siberia and Japan. Currently, she is the editor and producer of The Improvisor, the international journal of free improvisation.

For more information, contact Christian Asplund at (801) 422-3688.
