Utah Conference on Undergraduate Research Feb. 2 will host BYU students

Nearly 40 Brigham Young University students are slated to participate in the Utah Conference on Undergraduate Research Friday, Feb. 2 at the University of Utah.

The students will join undergraduates from 11 other Utah colleges and universities for the conference, which provides outstanding students a scholarly setting in which to share their academic research and activities with other students, faculty and community members.

The conference will be the crowning event for a week that has been declared “Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Week” by Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr.

The work presented at the conference will come from a variety of academic fields. BYU microbiology major TJ Bliss will present a poster detailing his project on the development of a new symbiotic mutant bacterium. Tiffany Taylor, a history major, will discuss how she compiled and publicized genealogical information from pioneers at Winter Quarters, Neb. Communications major Ben Watson will talk about his research comparing Ukrainian folk dance in Ukraine and Canada.

Faculty, students and the public are welcome to attend the conference. The event will begin with a keynote speech by Noelle Cockett, dean of the College of Agriculture at Utah State University, at 9 a.m., and student presentations and poster sessions will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Olpin Union Building.

Utah schools joining BYU at the conference will include the University of Utah, Utah State University, Utah Valley State College, Westminster College, Dixie State College and Weber State College, among others.
