U.S. News: BYU top 50 in business and law

  • Marriott School of Management ranked 33rd.
  • J. Reuben Clark Law School ranked 42nd.

Brigham Young University's law and business schools are again among the top 50 in the United States, reports U.S. News & World Report in its "America's Best Graduate Schools" issue. Other BYU graduate programs and specialties rank in the top 100 in their categories.

The Marriott School of Management is ranked 33rd, while the J. Reuben Clark Law School is ranked 42nd.

Dean James R. Rasband of the J. Reuben Clark Law School weighed in on this year’s law school rankings:

“Among the consistent strengths for which BYU’s Law School is recognized, three that stand out are the credentials of our students at entrance, their excellent performance on bar examinations at graduation, and the satisfaction of employers who hire them,” Rasband said.

In specialty rankings, the Marriott School's graduate accounting program is ranked 9th and the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology is ranked 59th in mechanical engineering.

Meanwhile, the McKay School of Education graduate program is ranked 79th.

This year's rankings come from data from surveys of more than 1,200 programs and some 12,400 academics and professionals conducted in fall 2009.

Each year, U.S. News ranks professional-school programs in business, education, engineering, law and medicine. These rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program quality and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research and students. The magazine also ranks programs in the sciences, social sciences, humanities and many other areas based solely on the ratings of academic experts.

The following programs were not newly ranked in this edition, but maintained these rankings:

Romney Institute of Public Management

-- 51st, top public affairs programs

School of Social Work

-- 82, top social work programs

David O. McKay School of Education

-- 72, top speech-language pathology programs

BYU's College of Nursing

-- 72, top nursing programs
