Tyler Jarvis to give BYU devotional address July 9

Tyler Jarvis, a professor of mathematics at Brigham Young University, will speak at the campus devotional Tuesday, July 9, at 11:05 a.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

The devotional will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels and online at byutv.org. Rebroadcast information can be found through byutv.org/schedule. Archived devotionals are available at speeches.byu.edu.

Summer term devotionals will also be broadcast on campus in F-201 Harris Fine Arts Center, the Joseph Smith Building Auditorium and the Varsity Theater in the Wilkinson Student Center.

Javis served as the chair of the Department of Mathematics at BYU from 2006 to 2012. He is also a co-founder of and co-director at the BYU-NSF Center for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics.

He has taught and conducted research at the University of Utah, Mississippi State University, Boston University, Mittag-Leffler Institute in Sweden, and Max-Planck-Institut für Mathematik in Germany.. His research focus at BYU is algebraic geometry relating to moduli spaces of curves.

Javis received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in mathematics at BYU in 1989 and 1990. Later he received another master’s degree and a doctorate in mathematics from Princeton University in 1992 and 1994.
