“Turkey and the European Union” subject of BYU lecture Oct. 17

Portland State University professor Birol A. Yeşilada will present “Turkey and the European Union” at a Brigham Young University Global Awareness Lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Yeşilada is a professor of political science and international studies and holds the endowed chair in contemporary Turkish studies in the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government. Prior to joining the PSU faculty, he served as chair of the Political Science Department at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

As a policy consultant, Yeşilada has worked with various U.S. government departments and corporations. He is currently vice president of Balaxa, LLC of Tigard, Ore., which specializes in international trade and consulting.

Yeşilada received a bachelor’s degree in neurobiology from the University of California, Berkeley, a master’s degree in political science from San Francisco State University and a doctorate in political science from the University of Michigan. He has received numerous awards and grants, including a Fulbright fellowship.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
